Our Story

From a Croft to a Castle

Letterfinlay Foods is a third-generation family food business based in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Our story began in 1988 on the shores of Loch Lochy, when Roy and Margaret Forsyth founded Letterfinlay Game Services.

A Chance Phone Call

In the early days, the business focused on supplying venison from local estates and wild salmon from Highland netting stations, working mainly with wholesalers. Then came a phone call from “Jeff the Chef” at the Cuillin Hills Hotel on the Isle of Skye, asking if Letterfinlay could supply game birds. That one enquiry marked the beginning of a new chapter, taking the business directly into hotels and restaurants and laying the foundations for relationships that would last for decades.

A New Home  - 1996

As demand grew, so did Letterfinlay. In 1996, Roy and Margaret were joined by Robert and Sandra Provan, bringing fresh drive to the business at an important time in its development. That same year, the company moved from Letterfinlay to its new home in Corpach, beneath Ben Nevis, and Letterfinlay Game Services became Letterfinlay Foods Ltd. The new name reflected just how far the business had come, and the much wider range of Scottish produce it could now offer.

Three Generations

Today, Letterfinlay Foods remains very much a family business. Kenneth, who began helping his father with venison from a young age, now leads the business alongside his wife Julie.  Roy may have stepped back from the day-to-day running of Letterfinlay, but he is still very much part of the team, and can often be found out visiting customers across the Highlands and Islands.

And now a third generation is beginning to make its mark. Kenneth and Julie’s son Finn is increasingly involved in the family business, learning his butchery skills from both his dad and his Papa. Nearly four decades after Roy and Margaret started out on the shores of Loch Lochy, the knowledge, craftsmanship and family values behind Letterfinlay continue to be passed from one generation to the next.

From Our Family to Yours

Today, Letterfinlay Foods brings together a traditional family butcher, fishmonger and smokehouse under one roof in Fort William. From Scottish beef, lamb and pork to locally sourced venison and game, fresh fish, our own sliced smoked salmon, Scottish cheeses and carefully selected produce, we continue to work with the same focus on quality and personal service that the business was built on.

We’re proud to supply families, hotels, restaurants and catering businesses throughout the Highlands and Islands, with our own refrigerated vehicles travelling regular routes across the West Highlands. Whether it’s a single order for home, a weekly restaurant delivery or something a little unusual, our team is always happy to help.

From a croft to a castle, and plenty of places in between.
